Questions of identity have become both more urgent and more fragmented in contemporary life, society, and politics. This project studies both theorists and writers at different moments of American history as each confronts and negotiates new configurations of Jewish and American communities in changing relationships with each other, exploring ways in which identities, seen as memberships pointing towards others, can overlap while remaining distinctive and committed.

Gli interrogativi riguardanti l’identità sono diventati più stringenti e frammentari nella società, nella vita e nella politica contemporanea. Questo progetto analizza il pensiero di teorici e scrittori in diversi momenti della storia americana e il loro modo di confrontarsi con il mutare della comunità ebrea e americana e l’evoluzione delle loro reciproche relazioni, studiando come le loro identità, intese come senso di appartenenza aperta, possano intersecarsi pur rimanendo tuttavia distinte e fedeli a loro stesse.
