Special Fellowships

Through the support of generous donors and partner organizations who share our commitment to the arts and humanities, the Bogliasco Foundation is pleased to offer Special Fellowship awards, some of which include travel support and/or stipends to recipients.

Special Fellowships may be designated for persons working in a particular discipline or reserved for individuals coming from certain countries or geographic areas. Special Fellows are selected from a list of eligible candidates already awarded a Bogliasco Fellowship, either by one of our partner organizations or by an internal selection panel on behalf of the partner organization.

For applicants: you will automatically be considered for all Special Fellowships for which you are eligible. However, please include a note in your application if you wish to be considered for one in particular.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, the following Special Fellowships may be available:

Aaron Copland Bogliasco Fellowship in Music
The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Inc. has provided funding for one Fellowship each year, which is reserved for an American composer. This Special Fellowship award provides a $1000 travel stipend.

Anonymous Was A Woman Bogliasco Special Fellowship
This Special Fellowship is awarded to a recipient of the annual Anonymous Was a Woman grant, which supports woman-identifying visual artists over the age of 40 and at a critical juncture in their career. The Fellowship comes with a stipend of $5,000.

The Arthur F. and Alice E. Adams Charitable Foundation Bogliasco Fellowship for Literature - *may be available in 2025-2026
This Special Fellowship provides an American writer with a one-month residency at our Study Center in Bogliasco, Italy, and includes direct financial support in the form of a $3,000 stipend for travel and other expenses.

Bogliasco and Ludwig Foundation Special Fellowship for a Cuban Artist or Scholar
This partnership with the Havana-based Ludwig Foundation may provide a travel stipend for selected Cuban Fellows and a 5-week residency at the Bogliasco Foundation’s Study Center.

Edward T. Cone Bogliasco Fellowship in Music
This Special Fellowship is named in honor of Edward T. Cone, the internationally renowned composer, pianist, and writer. The Edward T. Cone Foundation has provided funding for one Fellowship each year, which is reserved for an American composer. This Special Fellowship award provides a $1500 travel stipend.

Fondation Gianni Biaggi de Blasys Bogliasco Special Fellowship
This annual Fellowship, which is sponsored by the Fondation Gianni Biaggi de Blasys, is reserved for a Swiss artist or scholar at any career stage, working in any discipline of the arts and humanities. It comes with a 2000 CHF stipend.

Helen Frankenthaler Bogliasco Special Fellowship in Visual Arts
Thanks to support from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, we are pleased to announce the new Helen Frankenthaler Bogliasco Special Fellowship in Visual Arts. Designated for a promising early career woman visual artist from any nation, the Fellowship comes with a $2000 stipend.

The Natalie and Richard Jacoff Special Fellowship in Literature Scholarship
This special Fellowship is awarded to a rising scholar from any nation who demonstrates exceptional achievement and is developing a significant new project in literature scholarship. In addition to the one-month residency at the Bogliasco Center, the awardee will receive a $2000 stipend.

The Virginia Howard Fellowship
This new Fellowship for an African-American woman working in any discipline of the arts and humanities at any stage in her career is named after Virginia Howard, the late mother of founding trustee Marina Biaggi Harrison. Virginia was a passionate supporter of women's rights, equality and social justice movements. The Virginia Howard Fellowship acknowledges and celebrates the ingenuity, creativity and crucial role of Black American women. The Fellowship includes a $3000 stipend for the awardee.

William Thomas McKinley Bogliasco Award
This Special Fellowship, established by the American composer Elliott McKinley (BF ‘22), and funded on behalf of his father’s memorial foundation: The William Thomas McKinley Foundation for American Music, comes with a $500 stipend.

The Van Cleef & Arpels Fellowships in Choreography and Poetry
Van Cleef & Arpels sponsors annual Fellowships for a choreographer and a poet of any nationality. Both Fellowships include a $2000 stipend for the awardees.
