Nancy Princenthal is embarking on a comparative study of automatic drawing over the past century. Ostensibly a spontaneous form of expression, it has been shaped by innumerable cultural constraints, starting with the writings of psychologists and neuroscientists from William James forward. Evidence of these influences will be explored in the work of artists ranging from André Masson to Yayoi Kusama, Susan Hiller and Trenton Doyle Hancock.
Making a Mark: A Consideration of Visual Automatism
