Megan Marshall’s book in progress derives from a career’s worth of biographical work on the women of Hawthorne’s circle, first in The Peabody Sisters (one of whom married Nathaniel Hawthorne), then in Margaret Fuller: A New American Life. The new book features a handful of extraordinary women on the periphery of those two major biographies whose situations and problems reverberate with the heroines of Hawthorne’s novels, which he termed “romances.”
