On their arrival in Trieste in 1904, James Joyce left Nora Barnacle sitting on their suitcases outside the railway station while he went to scare up money for the penniless couple. She waited for him long into the night in a city where she knew no one and where she didn’t speak the language. This novel asks what would have happened if she hadn’t waited for Joyce and speculates on how different his destiny might have been without her.
